Was I out of my head? Was I out of my mind?

Ok ... so the other day I was just doing what I do everyday.  I was checking my blog, looking at a few shopping sites, facebooking ... same old, same old.  All of a sudden I came upon an ad for  University of Phoenix.  I have seen that ad a hundred times, but at that moment, I clicked on over to it.  It isn't a new thought in my head that sometime soon I may just need to get some sort of job to help bring in a few bucks (you know ... I have five children and all ... some of them are pretty darn smart). My husband has never been pushy about it.  Right now he knows how important my job is at home.  He lets me know that, which is a very good thing.

ANYWAY, I clicked on over to the part about participating in their online program.  Then it started to ask me questions.  I know who I am and what I have done so far, but where to go next ... huh?  I am nearly 38 years old and I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up.  I hold a BSN (Bachelor of Science in nursing), but I have ABSOLUTELY no desire to do that job again.  I've been out of it so long that I know I would have to refresh BIG TIME.

So I just pick something like  BS in Technology-Web Development.  I love my computer and I love to see cool, creative ads/sites, etc.  However, I probably know NOTHING about this.  After choosing that, I am asked for my email/phone number.  I give it.  Sometimes I have moments of stupidity ... you know, brain cells have been lost.  It took not even 10 minutes before I am called about my inquiry.

The man who is talking with me is very nice.  I decide not to give my excuse of running out the door, busy with children, or can you call back later.  I'm all about being honest lately so I partake in a chat with him.  He seems to understand me because he has a wife with 4 children and knows that I have been only working in the home for a number of years.  After listening to me for a bit, he seemed to want to encourage me to get my masters in hospital administration or business.  Those seem like very lovely degrees, but I just don't want that and I told him so.  He then reminds me that I already hold a bachelors degree and maybe just going for a masters would be quicker (as far as schooling goes).  I guess it makes sense, but it is not what I want!

Then I think ...

I don't really want to go back to school
I don't really have the money to go back to school
WHAT THE HECK am I doing?

What I am really looking to do in the next few years is to ease into something.  Maybe do something part time  and then, full time.  I want to do something that I love which doesn't offer me up  a lot of stress.  My husband has reminded me a number of times how he is more than willing to be the one who takes all the stress (outside the home) because I NEED to be able to take care of "all this" (at home) and there is plenty of stress to fill my days there ;)

Maybe I was having a crazy moment thinking I needed to go to the extreme of being educated all over again.
Maybe I have had those moments that I thought I don't have a "real" career
OR
Maybe I just was lonely and I was hoping to have a conversation with an adult about something grown up.

I thought all of that at the very end of my conversation where the man kindly told me all the stuff he would send off to me.  Lovely man he was, but I was needed in the kitchen with the little girl cutting my coupons into 1001 pieces.

My career is at home ... for now.  Who knows what I will be thinking tomorrow.

I've sooo been there. It seems like I'm surrounded by friends who have masters degrees and even one friend who's about to finish her phd. But just like you said, I'm needed at home now. We'll see what the future holds
I think it's so easy for us moms to think our jobs aren't "real" even when we KNOW they are. There's that little, nagging, "But, still ...." If you keep praying about this, I know God will open the right doors at the right time.

Hope those coupons weren't from the stack of keepers .... :-)
You sound like me I had that same mental breakdown on my blog a few months ago... What am I going to do when my girl don't keep me busy all day long.
I also felt the need to bring in extra cash because of college and WWWWWWeddings x 3 than I decied I had to put it the back of my head because the girls still need me a lot now and I do NOT have time for a LIFE now!
God bless you with 5 girls I wouuld love to know how you do it everyday.. I love my girls but all the screaming EKKKK

Wow, E! I've done similar stuff and then realized that my brain is way too taxed here at home. And I don't want to end up with more student loans to pay and still not working. It galls me now that I'm still $40,000 in debt for a degree I'm not using (at least in a way that PAYS me...in cold hard cash...lol!). I know that if I ever go back to work, it will not be in teaching. So yeah, I've been there...a lot.

Anyway...I digress, but I think if this is something you want, you should consider it. Even if it's just a few classes here and there. And don't let someone else talk you into a degree you don't want.

The grass always seems greener on the other side.

Now that I have all the kids in school I thought I could handle subbing and working all day.

It is so hard. I have to do everything that I was doing plus work a full day! My dh does not get it when I pack all the lunches and his and mine that I am a little peeved. I told him he has to pack his own lunch if I work...he told me don't work.

Enjoy that little sweet 3yr old...those years go by fast.

Oh girlfriend, I so hear you. Next time you want to phone the university of phoenix, you can call me. I'll talk you through it. :)

We all know where you're coming from. The important thing is that you and YOUR dear hubby are on the same page. And we imperfect human beings all go through periods of feeling inadequate at our vocations. I know I do ALL.THE.TIME!

You are exactly where you are supposed to be - but with society in your face, it's hard not to question. Just keep coming back to know where you'll get your strokes - your husband, your family and your friends! :)
Boy, can I relate. I made the mistake of requesting information about pharmacy tech school, and I'm STILL getting phone calls!
My job at home is far from over, and there isn't anywhere else I want to be...yet, sometimes, I still forget how important it is, and that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing.
It's not easy being MOM sometimes!

I can relate to this too, especially when money is tight, I find myself trying to come up with a way to bring in a little more. To "contribute" KWIM? I think there's a little vanity there too-- I would really enjoy having some kind of impressive answer to "so what do you do?" But in my heart I know I'm a very lucky person to get to spend my days the way I do. ((Hugs))

I have called them before, too. My littlest one started kindergarten this year and I thought maybe I could work on a degree (I worked while my hubby went to school, so I never finished) Anyway, they were really nice but I do think they tend to steer people into things they may not be suited for. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do but I thought maybe just finish what I started long ago. It ended up that I just dropped it and went on to other things. I still would like to finish it someday, who knows. I think we all have those days, though. Do what makes you happy!

Wow! I'm so behind on my comments. Sorry.
I find myself thinking about a way to bring in some more dollars as well but know dep down that I need to be at home with the kids right now. It's crucial at their ages that I be home with them. Maybe later, I will go out and get my masters or another bachelors all over again. We'll see.
You are doing the right thing!

Feeling every bit of 46 ... ugh!

When I was 45, I was feeling fabulous.   I was fit, energetic, and I thought I could easily pass for 40;) Age was just a number and I certainly didn't think I felt or looked my true age. Then February 11th came and I turned 46.   I have sciatica on my left side, my left knee is stiff, and I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot.   I've resorted to stretching all the time and popping the occasional anti-inflammatory.   There are dark circles under my eyes that I've had to start putting concealer on.   My hair is growing out from last years 45 year old short hair, but it's just in an awkward stage.  I can't decide if I want to cut it again or let it grow out.   I even thought of styling my hair differently by doing a different hair part.   That was a terrible idea because I was SHOCKED to see how much gray is now growing in the center of my scalp.  I also think my metabolism is slowing down because my mid section seems a little thicker ... ...

"The Loveliness of The Seashore"

What is the "Seashore" like? "Where the sky meets the sea ... The seashore is a place where the sea and the sky are the same smoky gray until ... the morning sun breaks through. The hot noonday sun feels warm as a big soft cat covering you. And it seems there is nothing in the world except the sound of the wind and the rising and falling of waves." Over at Dawn 's there are so many wonderful books suggested on her blog. Earlier this month I couldn't help but to peek at some of them ... thanks Dawn! *The above quote came from The Seashore Book . The ocean moves in and then moves out. This place where water, sky and earth meet is never the same. The tide comes in, the tide goes out, each wave that returns pushes against the incoming swell as it is pulled back into the endless depths and swallowed into the vastness of an unknown deep. Such is each day of our "daily" lives. I grew up enjoying the sights, sound, and the surf of the NY/Jersey "shor...

A scattered post ...

I throw myself into stuff all the time.  It can be anything from the start of a swim season, a new school year, the election, a vacation, an exercise routine etc.  I'm kind of in a phase where I really don't know what my focus should be.  I turned on the television and honestly, I have no idea what is on this fall season ... NO IDEA AT ALL .  If I watched television in the past few months, it was something kid related or Fox News. I NEED A NEW FOCUS. My current thoughts  ... reading a fictional, just for fun book stepping up my exercise routine thinking about our Christmas wish lists and shopping baking more ... I really am slacking in this area ways to save money so that we can get a new (second) washer and dryer for the upstairs (not a fancy kind because this would mostly be used by my oldest two children)... I actually have hookups. I wonder if a lot of people go through a sort of "lull" period this time of the year.  Surely it doesn't last long with the start ...
